Unfortunately, most days you do not have to look to hard to find stories about tragic accidents that was easily avoidable if the victim simply donned a his vis safety vest. High visibility or reflective clothing allows one to be more readily visible to those in the vicinity.
All of us have heard stories about hunters falsely identifying another hunter in the woods and believing they were some type of big game. Hunters will often say that you should wait for any animal to be in full view in a clearing so that you can truly identify it before you ever take a shot. Often they get quite excited to finally spot a potential target and a hunter will think that the movement behind some brush looks like a deer or some other animal and take the shot.
Of course the one taking the shot is still to blame for these accidents, however if the victim had simply put on a safety vest or high visibility jacket, they never would have been identified as anything other than another hunter.
Hunting is not the only place riddled with accidents that could be avoided with high visibility clothing. There are numerous accounts of runners and bikers being hit by automobiles while out for a jog or riding on the road. The drivers in these accidents often state that they never saw the unfortunate victim until they were right on top of them.
Many runners falsely believe that wearing a white shirt makes them visible even on a dark night. Many have paid the price for this myth.
High vis reflective clothing would eliminate most of these type of senseless accidents.
